Lakers rookie Jabari Brown reminisces about winning title with Salesian

Jabari Brown, a rookie shooting guard with the Los Angeles Lakers, gave a shout-out to his former teammates at Salesian College Preparatory and Oakland High during a recent interview by 1st String Magazine.

In the YouTube video, Brown, who graduated from Oakland High in 2011, talked about one of his favorite moments of his high school basketball career.

“Sophomore year, while I was at Salesian, we won the Division IV state championship at Arco. We beat Bishop Montgomery on a game-winner, so that was a real good experience.”

Brown also offered advice to young people who want to seriously pursue athletics.

“Stay focused, don’t let things get you off track. If you want to play sports, you’re going to have to leave some of the other stuff alone. Get your grades so you can get to college and just work hard. Don’t let anybody tell you what you can’t do.”

The Berkeley-born Brown played with Salesian until he transferred to top-ranked basketball school Findlay Prep. He transferred again to Oakland High, where he graduated. He left the University of Missouri for the NBA his junior year.
