A rash of cooking fires at the Nevin Plaza public housing development in Richmond led to the installation of “SmartBurner” technology in all units, according to City Manager Bill Lindsay’s latest newsletter.
The fires in recent months at 2400 Nevin Plaza led to meetings with Fire Marshal Terry Harris, Richmond Housing Authority staff and the Nevin Plaza Commission. After fire safety trainings were held, Nevin Plaza Commissioner Jackie Thompson proposed installing SmartBurner technology, which has temperature-limiting control capabilities that helps prevent cooking fires and conserves energy.
In addition to the installation, the Fire Prevention Services Division is also considering a city wide ordinance to implement “SmartBurner” technology inside all electric stove appliances for any assisted living developments.
