Update: Both eastbound lanes of Interstate Highway 580 have reopened, but westbound lanes were expected to remain closed until 5-6 p.m., according to CHP.

The Richmond-San Rafael Bridge was temporarily shut down in both directions during the Friday morning commute after a big rig hauling household goods caught fire near the bridge on the Marin side, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Traffic backed up for miles due to the fire that was reported about 5:30 a.m., CHP said. The driver, who was not injured and was the truck’s sole occupant, reportedly crashed the big rig into the center divide. A fire broke out in one of the trailers, CHP said.

About 7 a.m., traffic was being diverted around the crash scene, but CHP added it would take several hours before the scene is cleared, according to Bay City News.
