A Richmond resident found a bag in the dumpster area within the Crescent Park apartment complex last week and immediately turned it into police, as it contained a loaded Ruger Mini 14, a .223 caliber rifle, along with three empty magazines, police said.

Officers were called to the complex on Hartnett Avenue about 11:30 a.m. March 30, police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov told us Tuesday.

“The rifle was loaded with 30 rounds and one in the firing chamber,” police said in a Facebook post. “Along with the rifle were (2) empty 20 round magazines and (1) empty 10 round magazine.”

RPD praised the resident for turning in the “ready-to-shoot” gun.

“This is another good example of community policing, where Richmond residents become part of the solution in caring for their neighborhood, and partnering with the police department,” RPD said.
