Community members are encouraged to contribute to a memorial fund for Thomas Weller, who was tragically killed in a crash on Interstate Highway 80 on April 5, just three months before his first child is due to be born.
Weller, 24, who was described by loved ones as a charming young man, was driving a 2000 Honda Accord westbound on I-80 at San Pablo Dam Road about 5:50 a.m. when his vehicle crashed into a pillar near the right-hand shoulder and caught fire, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The death of the well-loved Weller is being mourned across the community.
According to loved ones, one of whom posted an obituary and tribute in the Richmond Standard comment section, Thomas was born in Walnut Creek and attended Vista Christian School in Richmond. He loved sports, playing for El Cerrito Baseball and the Richmond Steelers Youth Football team.
He attended Hercules High School, where he played baseball, football and soccer and graduated in 2009.
Weller was “raised in the church,” a life-long member of the Miracle Temple Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Richmond, and was active in the youth department and organized activities for youth.
“To his faith, he added his own world views, and wore them literally on his sleeve,” Frances Gandy stated in the obit. “One of his first tattoos reads, ‘Live for today tomorrow isn’t promised.'”
He enjoyed camping and beach activities, gatherings with friends and family, and was employed at Wells Fargo Bank in Piedmont, where he was well-liked by the staff and clients.
He leaves behind his grandmother Lerline Gandy; parents Jesse and Tanya; brothers Jesse David Weller, and Nicholas Erich Weller (Karla); and Michele Lachica, who is expecting their son, Thomas Sebastian, in July, according to the obit.
Thomas’ memorial fund was established by his employer, the Piedmont Wells Fargo, under the Thomas Weller Memorial Account. The account number is 922 431 6522.
