Antioch woman, 51, dies while in custody at West County Detention Facility in Richmond

Sheriff set to explain plans to add 480 beds at Richmond jail, increasing population to more than 1,000

A 51-year-old Antioch inmate’s death Saturday at a county detention facility in Richmond is under investigation, sheriff’s officials said.

The incident unfolded when medical staff went to treat several female inmates in Building 4 at the West County Facility at 5555 Giant Highway. Sheriff’s officials have not said why the inmates needed treatment.

About 12:15 p.m., the Antioch woman, whose identity was withheld until next of kin is notified, became unresponsive. She died at the scene despite efforts to revive her.

Her death is under investigation by the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office and sheriff’s office.

No further information was released.
