You’ll test the menu of the soul food restaurant that is expected to move into downtown Richmond soon — and help contribute to an effort to revitalize the city’s downtown corridor — at a launch party next week for the build-out of the retail space in the BART Station parking garage.

The launch party will take place Thursday, April 30, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 1600 Macdonald Ave.

The cost is $50 for tickets purchased in advance (purchase online here) and $60 at the door for food and entertainment. The tax-deductible donation will go toward programs to improve downtown Richmond and also to help develop the space where Home of Chicken and Waffles plans to open its third Bay Area restaurant, according to the Richmond Main Street Initiative, the nonprofit spearheading a City Council-approved effort to improve downtown.

In order for Home of Chicken and Waffles to move in, they need to raise $500,000 in capital to outfit the space with such amenities as electrical and plumbing, as the space has never been used, said Amanda Elliott, RMSI’s executive director.

rmsi.4-24RMSI said donations will not only help the restaurant reach that goal, they will also help raise an additional $1.5 million to develop the entire 10,000 square feet of retail space in the building, which has the potential to hold another two restaurants, Elliott said.

RMSI recently attempted to raise $75,000 for the space build-out through an Indiegogo campaign, but did not meet its goal before the end of the campaign, Elliott added.

“Although the Indiegogo campaign ended on April 17…we will continue to raise funds to support them and other small business projects in downtown Richmond,” Elliott said.

Thursday’s launch party will include a performance from “The Professor” Terence Elliott & Nymani Music. Also, Home of Chicken and Waffles will serve signature soul food dishes. A variety of wines will be served as well.

Parking is available at Maconald Avenue and Marina Way (open lot, no charge), 12th Street and Nevin Avenue (open lot and garage, paid). For more information, call (510) 236-4049 or email
