An annual school district event that has for more than two decades tackled childhood obesity by promoting healthy lifestyles to local families will take place again Thursday at Highland Elementary School in Richmond, the district announced Tuesday.
The 22nd annual Nutrition, Health and Fitness Festival, hosted by the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) Food Services Department, will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Highland Elementary, 2829 Moyers Road.
The theme for this year’s event is “Cooking it up fresh and healthy with fruits and vegetables for wellness California style.”
The festival’s aim is “to promote school wellness by empowering students and their families to adopt healthy lifestyles and to take initiative to be physically active and nutritionally responsible,” the district said in a statement.
The event will include presentations and activities such as a healthy cooking segment for students; a fun, educational performance on wellness; nutrition education on fruits and vegetables, including a farmers’ market tour of California grown local fruits and vegetables; taste testing; and promotion of physical activities through Fitness for Wellness events such as Zumba/Dance, the Restaurant relay, the Farm To Table Relay, the Wheel of Nutrition and more, according to the statement.
