BART announced the launch Tuesday of a campaign to address a recent uptick in suicides and suicide attempts on the transit agency’s property.
The campaign in the short-term will have prevention signs posted at stations stating “Suicide is not the route” along with the toll-free National Suicide Lifeline. Also, training will be provided to BART’s frontline staff on how to recognize when people are in crisis.
Longer term, BART will look into adding permanent signage in stations, coordinating outreach events, and, most interestingly, “looking into the feasibility of and funding for platform screen doors.” See a Google images search for examples of such doors here.
Last year, BART assembled a task force after incidents of suicides by train increased from six in 2013 to 14 last year.
Two recent incidents being investigated as suicides occurred at the Richmond and El Cerrito Plaza stations, claiming the lives of a 32-year-old man and 17-year-old boy.
