All plants are $3 at Saturday’s highly-anticipated Great Tomato Plant Sale, which will take place at Urban Tilth’s AdamsCrest Urban Farm in Richmond.

Also, thanks to compost donations from Republic Services, the city of Richmond will be giving away free compost to the public at the event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the urban farm at 5000 Patterson Circle.

The Great Tomato Plant Sale and Compost Giveaway is happening for a second year due to a highly successful 2014 event, organizers said.

Nearly 40 varieties of heirloom tomato plants will be featured, all specifically selected for West County growing conditions. Other veggies will be offered, too.

“Many [tomato plants] are new for this year, and some are even grown from locally-harvested seed,” organizers said.

Those seeking guidance on gardening will have help from experts.

The University of California Contra Costa Master Gardeners co-sponsors the event with Urban Tilth.
