A male suspect was injured in a shootout with a Richmond police officer Saturday night, according to police and news reports.

A lone police sergeant patrolling about 7 p.m. tried to pull over a vehicle at 25th Street and Roosevelt Avenue, but the vehicle failed to stop and led the sergeant on a pursuit that led to the 500 block of 38th Street.

There, the suspect fled from the vehicle on foot while clutching a firearm, police said.

The officer gave chase and near the rear of the residence the officer and suspect exchanged fire, but no one was hit.

The suspect attempted to flee again but a gunfire exchange resumed. In the second exchange, the suspect was struck.

He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening, police said.

The suspect’s identity was not immediately known. The incident remains under investigation.
