Mariah Seals, a Richmond native who plays basketball for Utah Valley University, has been named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Freshman of the Year, according to the university.

The 5-foot-3 guard, an alum from Miramonte High School, scored in double digits in 10 WAC games this season, ranked fifth in WAC play in three-point field goal percentage (.411) and in three-point field goals made (2.14). She was second in scoring for the Wolverines, averaging 11.7 points per game during the regular season.

She is the only Wolverine to start in all 29 games this season.

  1. And, in other local yokel news…. First Team All-WAC selection Sasha Weber of New Mexico State attended Wilson Elementary before moving from Richmond to the state of Washington.
