Later this month, the Richmond Art Center is set to feature the works of Bay Area artist Mildred Howard, who helped beautify the Richmond BART station parking garage with her art (see photo above).
Along with Howard’s work, the Art Center will for the 50th year feature hundreds of works by West Contra Costa Unified School District students.
The free exhibitions will open with a reception on March 21 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Art Center, located at 2540 Barrett Ave. They will remain on display through May 24.
For over four decades, Howard has taken common objects of daily life and infused them with meaning, often addressing the subjects of racism, injustice, need and compassion. Her work at the Richmond BART Station, Moving Richmond, features a poem by Macarthur Fellow Ishmael Reed that was incised into a 40-foot wall of faceted steel.
Here’s one of Mildred’s pieces that will be shown at the Richmond Art Center exhibit:
The works created by WCCUSD students were accomplished during after-school and summer Art in the Community programs. The artwork is undeniably impressive. Here’s a piece created by student artist Angel Garcia:
