Local students are encouraged to apply to attend a UC Berkeley camp this summer to learn how to code, build simple websites and apps, and understand network vulnerability and protection.
West County students headed into the 9th through 12th grades in the fall of 2015 are eligible for the CY-BEAR camp, which will be held on the UC Berkeley campus from June 28 to July 4, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. each day.
Students do not need a background in coding in order to participate.
“The program will provide students with exposure to cyber security and privacy principles by offering students the ability to learn how to code, build simple websites and apps, and understand network vulnerability and protection,” program officials said.
Students will also go on field trips to local tech companies and receive college counseling from UC Berkeley Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department staff. Lunch and transportation costs will be covered.
A second summer camp at Berkeley available to local high school students is SUCCESS@BERKELEY. The camp intends to engage in STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
The camp, which runs from June 22 to July 31 (except July 3rd), from 9:00 am-3:00 pm., includes “field trips to the Autocad 3-D printing museum, NASA’s Ames Research Center, Bay Area ecological reserves and research sites,” officials said. Students will also receive college counseling, as careers in STEM fields are vast in terms of variety and are often high-paying and exciting.
