A man was killed and his family hospitalized after crashing into an iron pillar on Regatta Boulevard in Richmond about 6:20 p.m. Saturday, police told news outlets.

The man was identified by the Contra Costa County Coroner’s Office as Anthony Tuaumu-Vaili, 22, of Richmond.

“The pillar went through the windshield and got him in the head,” Lt. Charles Whitney told the Contra Costa Times.

The solo crash, which occurred with Tuaumu-Vaili’s wife and two children in the vehicle, happened near the entrance to the Safeway bread factory at 905 South 34rd St. Tuaumu-Vaili’s family members were hospitalized in the crash. Their current condition is not known.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The family had reportedly been returning from church services in South San Francisco at the time of the crash, according to Bay City News.
