A handgun found along the bicycle and pedestrian path on the Richmond Greenway last week was believed to have been discarded by suspects who successfully fled police.

On Tuesday, the Richmond Police Department released images of the weapon on the department’s Facebook page.

The incident occurred about 10:55 p.m. Friday when an officer attempted to stop a stolen vehicle with paper plates near 16th Street and Macdonald Avenue, police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said. That led to a short pursuit that terminated at a dead end at 15th Street and the Richmond Greenway.

The occupants of the vehicle fled. Although they were not found, police canvassed the area and found a loaded 9 mm Sig Sauer semi-auto pistol.

RPD recently increased patrols in response to an uptick in gun violence in the city.

The department has since posted several images of guns seized during stops.

The most recent image was posted Tuesday afternoon of a .357 revolver found in a car along with methamphetamine in the Iron Triangle neighborhood (see below). In that incident, which occurred about 1 a.m., the suspects were in a double-parked car, and while the passenger successfully fled the driver was arrested, police said.

On Thursday night, police questioned eight trespassers at the Monterey Pines housing complex and arrested a man in possession of a loaded gun (see below).
