A 49-year-old man was arrested in connection with a Richmond burglary attempt Sunday after a police officer spotted him riding a ‘getaway’ bicycle with a crowbar strapped to it, police said.
The burglary attempt was reported at about 1:05 p.m. in the 600 block of 22nd Street, Richmond police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.
The homeowner was in the backyard when he and another witness saw the suspect, identified as Richmond resident Willie Gilbert, attempting to pry open the front security screen door with a crowbar, Abetkov said.
The homeowner and witness went to confront the suspect, but he got away on his bicycle.
After interviewing the witnesses, a Richmond beat cop drove around the area searching for a suspect. Based upon a good description from witnesses, the officer spotted Gilbert riding his bicycle with the crowbar strapped to it in the 600 block of Portola Avenue.
Gilbert was stopped and one of the witnesses helped to positively identify Gilbert as the burglar, Abetkov said.
“This is another good example of community policing, where Richmond residents become good witnesses and provide a good description of the suspect,” police said in a Facebook post.
