Boat shopping in order after Richmond ferry project gains unanimous approval

The Richmond ferry terminal project received unanimous approval Thursday by the board of the Contra Costa Transportation Authority (CCTA), which sets forth the process of purchasing boats and constructing a terminal near Craneway Pavilion.

The CCTA board approved entering into an agreement (see agreement here) with the Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) to implement ferry service in Richmond, said Richmond Mayor Tom Butt, who represents his city on the West Contra Costa Transportation Advisory Committee (WCCTAC).

WETA is expected to also approve the agreement on March 5, according to Butt.

“This will begin the process of ordering boats, completing the design and construction of the terminal, and ultimately, running the boats,” Butt said in his e-forum Thursday night.

Butt has said the biggest challenge moving forward is expediting WETA’s schedule for implementation of service in 2018.

“I would like to knock a couple of years off that,” he told us last month.

The terminal will offer service to San Francisco during the commute hours on weekdays (see here for more information about the planned schedule). No weekend and holiday service are included as part of the agreement.

Adult fares are set at $8.30 one-way, or $6.25 with a Clipper card. The youth and senior fare are set at $4.10 and children under 5 would ride for free.

Last summer, Richmond City Manager Bill Lindsay took a mock roundtrip on a ferry between Richmond and San Francisco that took about 25 minutes each direction.
