Valley View Elementary will get a temporary campus after the West Contra Costa Unified District school board voted 3-2 to spend $3.6 million on the facility, according to the Contra Costa Times.
The funds were approved even if the district is uncertain how soon it will be able to afford to rebuild Valley View’s main 50-year-old campus at 3416 Maywood Dr.
Cost overruns to the district’s construction program threatens to delay multiple projects. Last week, Richmond council voted to send a letter to the school board urging it to move forward with the Valley View project.
Councilmember Jael Myrick said even if construction on the main campus is delayed, the temporary campus would be a significant improvement from the current campus. Valley View parents repeated that sentiment at Wednesday’s school board, the Times said.
The school hoped to have an interim campus finished as early as July.
