A push to fill the Richmond BART parking garage retail space with a restaurant will receive support from an online fundraising campaign, according to Richmond Main Street Initiative (RMSI), the nonprofit spearheading a City Council-approved effort to revitalize downtown.
RMSI is set to launch an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign to help pay for the development of the retail space on Macdonald Avenue at 16th Street. RMSI’s main goal is to bring soul food restaurant Home of Chicken and Waffles in the location.
“The BART space is a ‘raw’ space or ’empty shell space,” said Amanda Elliott, RMSI executive director. “It will need a total build out…a complete development of the space. We’ll be working with the business owner to determine the exact use of funds for the development of the space.”

The Indegogo campaign will be among the topics of discussion at RMSI’s Annual Stakeholders’ meeting on Feb. 18.
The meeting runs from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the BBK Center for Health & Healing at 310 9th Street (at Macdonald).
The nonprofit plans to go over its successes and challenges from last year, and request input about its plans for 2015 including the Indiegogo campaign.
Light refreshments will be provided at the meeting, and RMSI would love it if folks could RSVP here.
