A Richmond police officer shot and critically injured an armed man Thursday afternoon, police said.
The man, who hasn’t been identified, was shot in the 2000 block of Nevin Avenue about 1:30 p.m. after allegedly pulling out a semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine as the officer approached him, Richmond police Capt. Mark Gagan said.
According to the preliminary police investigation, the officer assigned to the Central District was on patrol when he went to investigate a suspicious person. The area between the BART Station and 25th Avenue has had a rash of armed robberies over the last month, Gagan said.
After the officer got out of his car and walked toward the man, the man pulled a gun, Gagan said. The officer, fearing for his life, then opened fire, he added.
The man was taken to a trauma center, where he is being treated. The police officer is being interviewed by the district attorney’s office, Gagan said.
Further details about the confrontation were not immediately available, as interviews still need to be done. Police did say there were no language barriers between the suspect and officer, who are both Hispanic and speak Spanish.
Along with the gun, police seized a “large quantity” of methamphetamine from the man, Gagan added.
At the start of the year, uniformed Richmond police officers began wearing body cameras. Investigators hope the camera was recording at the time of the shooting. However, Gagan said if the camera wasn’t activated, the officer would not be violating any rules.
“Our policy does not mandate that officers have their camera on all the time,” Gagan said. “If the footage exists, that will be very helpful. But if it doesn’t exist, it will not be a violation of policy.”
The police department is currently in a trial and implementation phase with the body cams, Gagan added.
