A barista at an El Cerrito Starbucks certainly earned his tips last weekend.

The employee left the store at 3090 El Cerrito Plaza on Saturday afternoon in order to follow a suspected tip jar thief down Fairmount Avenue, according to the El Cerrito Police Department crime blotter. At the nearby BART station, the barista retrieved the jar, police said.

Police responded at about 2:30 p.m. to the incident. They interviewed the suspect, a 64-year-old Hercules man, and discovered he was unaware of what had happened or what year it was.

The man was committed for a psychiatric evaluation and transported to the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center, police said.
