Marceleno Gonzales, 20, of Richmond, has been identified by police as the man who was shot by an officer Thursday.

Gonzales remained in critical condition at a local trauma center Friday, police said.

The department cited a history of police interactions with Gonzales since 2007, most recently an arrest in December for allegedly dealing drugs and possessing a firearm.

The December arrest occurred just a few blocks from where Gonzales was shot by an officer Thursday. The incident unfolded in the 2000 block of Nevin Avenue about 1:30 p.m., when a patrol officer assigned to the area went to investigate a suspicious person, Richmond police Capt. Mark Gagan said.

As the officer approached, Gonzales allegedly pulled out a semi-automatic pistol with an extended magazine, Gagan said. The officer opened fire because he feared for his life, the captain said.

Along with the gun, police seized a “large quantity” of methamphetamine from his clothing, Gagan said.
The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is investigating the case per county protocol.
