A 23-year-old man was killed and two others were injured in a shooting near Richmond’s Crescent Park Apartments Tuesday night, police said.
The incident, the city’s first homicide of the year, occurred about 7:20 p.m. when officers patrolling the area heard shots fired, police spokesperson Nicole Abetkov said. RPD’s Shotspotter gunshot detection system was also activated as officers continued to the 3900 block of Fleming Avenue, where they found three victims.
One man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was identified as Sirmonte Bernstine, 23, of Richmond. Two more victims were seriously injured but are expected to survive, Abetkov said.
A motive wasn’t immediately clear, but the incident prompted the deployment of additional officers in the city for fear of retaliatory attacks, Abetkov added.
A separate shooting occurred later in the night. About 10:30 p.m., the Shotspotter activation alerted police to a shooting in the 700 block of Carlson Boulevard, near Kennedy High School. No victims were found, but at about 1 a.m. a male showed up with a gunshot wound to his left foot. His statement to police was inconsistent and investigators aren’t certain that he was involved in the Carlson Blvd. shooting, Abetkov said.
