Richmond chess tourney honoring two of game’s local supporters on Jan. 31

Residents invited to free community chess tournament in Richmond Saturday

A free annual chess tournament honoring two big supporters of local chess initiatives will be held on Jan. 31 at the Richmond Recreation Department at 3230 Macdonald Ave.

The 4th Annual McKinley Williams/John Easterling Community Chess Tournament is quad-format and open to both rated and non-rated players, said TC Ball, tournament coordinator.

The event honors McKinley Williams, President Emeritus of Contra Costa College, who “knew the educational impact of the game on students,” Ball said.

Also recognized is Easterling, who mentored Bay Area youth in chess and left a legacy of active players.

“Players of every level are welcome to play and enjoy a lively and competitive event suited for any lover of the game of chess,” Ball added.

The tournament is co-sponsored by the West Coast Chess Alliance and the Richmond Recreation Department.
