Local Starbucks stores offering free wireless charging stations for smartphones
The Duracell Powermat charging station is now at 200 Bay Area Starbucks stores.

About 200 Starbucks stores in the Bay Area are now offering patrons a place to charge their smartphones for free using wireless technology, including at West County locations such as Point Richmond and El Cerrito.

Along with free WiFi, the stores feature Duracell Powermat stations on some tables and counters.

We tried it out at the Point Richmond Starbucks on Friday and found that it worked and was easy to use. We also know the store on San Pablo Avenue in El Cerrito currently features the technology.

Patrons can borrow or purchase a “ring” at the stores to plug into their phones. They can then simply place the ring on the Powermat to start charging.

Starbucks announced in November it was installing the phone charging stations in Bay Area stores with plans to roll them out nationally.

Ran Poliakine, CEO of Powermat Technologies, says Bay Area residents “no longer have to worry about making it through their day with limited battery power.”

“They know that the nearest charge is only as far away as the nearest Starbucks,” he added.
