The Golden Gate Bridge will be closed to traffic this weekend, which could lead to traffic hell in the East Bay if travelers don’t heed to the bridge district’s no travel advisory.

The bridge closure will start at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday and end 4 a.m. Monday. During that time, a long-anticipated moveable median barrier designed to prevent head-on collisions will be installed.

Typically, about 80,000 autos cross the Golden Gate Bridge on weekend days, and 60,000 use the Richmond-San Rafael, bridge district spokesperson Priya Clemens told the San Francisco Chronicle.

“So if all 80,000 decide to use the Richmond-San Rafael, it’s going to be a mess,” she said to the newspaper.

Some good news is the Golden Gate Ferry will be offering extra service, including night service, and Golden Gate Transit buses will still be allowed to cross the GGB. Also, with the bridge district’s issuance of a “no travel policy”  and all the publicity this weekend’s closure has received, officials hope folks will simply avoid bridge travel.
