Golden State Warriors star Klay Thompson proved Monday why the team’s success this year isn’t the only reason fans love this organization.

Richmond-based Bay Area Rescue Mission, the nonprofit providing a wide range of services for the Bay Area’s homeless population, was one of several homeless services organizations to receive bagged lunches assembled by Warriors staff and volunteers Monday at the Oakland Marriott.

The team prepared 1,000 lunches and gave 300 to the Bay Area Rescue Mission, said Steve Lee, a special projects manager for the nonprofit.

Not only that, Warriors star guard Thompson helped carry the lunches to the Bay Area Rescue Mission truck, Lee said.

Spencer Helix, a driver for the nonprofit, posted a photo on Instagram and described his interaction with Thompson.

Thompson was a “really cool dude,” Helix stated, and added he and Thompson had a “small conversation” about the guard’s days at Washington State University.

The bagged lunches will be given to homeless folks staying at the Bay Area Rescue Mission’s Richmond shelter, Lee said, particularly those heading out to jobs.

The lunches included a ham and cheese sandwich, a clementine, a cookie, a bottle of water and a personalized note.

The effort was part of HashtagLunchbag, a grassroots effort started two years ago in Los Angeles where volunteers hold monthly meetups to pack and distribute bag lunches, the Warriors said.
