The Tottenham Hotspur, a famous 132-year-old soccer organization competing in the English Premier League, had its flag hung outside El Cerrito’s main government building following its recently announced partnership with the El Cerrito Futbol Club.
The partnership means young East Bay soccer players will benefit from Tottenham Hotspur’s world renowned coaching and philosophy, the team said in a statement.
Because of the partnership, the El Cerrito Futbol Club, which has more than 900 youth and adult members, is now known as the Tottenham Hotspur East Bay. The local club has more than 900 members from preschool age to 25.
“Coaches will ensure and maintain high standards, while overseeing player development using methods based around a philosophy of stylish, attacking football,” the English club said. “El Cerrito F.C. Spurs players will also play matches in our world famous kit.”
The team compared the partnership to one established in Tallahassee, Fla., in August, and said such moves will help in the grassroots development of U.S. players.
“Our Global Coaching team works across the world to develop young players and educate coaches, getting across a unique philosophy the Club has always prided itself on – attacking football played with style and flair,” Tottenham goalkeeper Brad Friedel, an American, said in the statement.
