A Rodeo man pulled up to a Wells Fargo branch in El Cerrito in a BMW on New Year’s Eve, hoping to pull cash from his newly opened account, but the rest of his day was anything but bubbly, police said.

The incident began the previous day, when the 19-year-old opened an account at the bank at 9800 San Pablo Ave, the El Cerrito Police Department said. The next morning, at about 9:20 a.m., the man returned to the bank seeking to withdraw money.

There was a problem with his plan: Wells Fargo employees were well aware that the check the man had used to open the account was fraudulent, police said.

Police were called and the man was arrested on suspicion of forgery, an outstanding warrant and possession of methamphetamine.

There was also an issue with the BMW he had driven to the bank.

“Officers were also determined the subject drove himself to the bank in a BMW which was reported stolen to the San Rafael Police Department,” police said.

He was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
