Former Kennedy High football star Tevita Fonua has signed a letter of intent to play for the University of New Mexico, according to the Albuquerque Journal.

The 6-foot-4, 310-pound offensive lineman who has been shining at Laney College, told the Journal he chose New Mexico over Arkansas State, Idaho and South Alabama following a campus visit.

“It was just the atmosphere, the lifestyle,” Fonua said. “It felt like a family.”

Fonua also talked about playing alongside former Laney teammate and current New Mexico linebacker Chris Lee, who warned that the transition from junior college to Division I football was no walk in the park. But Fonua seems excited for the challenge.

“It’s gonna be fun to be a Lobo,” he told the Journal.
