The man who was shot by a Richmond homeowner in what investigators were told was a burglary attempt Saturday night has died.

Terrell Ruben, 42, of Richmond, was pronounced dead at John Muir Hospital on Sunday, police spokesperson Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

Few details have been released about the investigation, which remains ongoing.

About 6:15 p.m. that night, officers responded to reports from neighbors of shots fired in the area of 43rd Street and Roosevelt Avenue. They found Ruben with a gunshot wound in critical condition.

The homeowner told investigators he opened fire believing two burglars were in the process of robbing his house or yard. Police are still searching for the second suspect, who apparently wasn’t located after an extensive police search.

The homeowner has cooperated with police and has not been charged in connection with the shooting, Abetkov said. That could change pending the results of the investigation, she added.
