A 20-year-old driver was killed and his two passengers injured after the car they were in struck a light pole Saturday night after skidding off the rain-soaked roadway and overturning, police said.

Excessive speed is suspected in the horrific crash that occurred in the southbound lanes just south of the Giant Highway exit about 10:45 p.m., Richmond police spokesperson Nicole Abetkov said Monday.

The driver, identified by the authorities Monday as Misael Quintero, died after being transported to the hospital. Two passengers in their 20s were transported to the hospital and are expected to survive, Abetkov said.

The tragic incident serves as a reminder to drive safely, particularly in rainy conditions, Abetkov said.
