The grieving family of Rusamie Ashly Phongphoumy, 19, a Kennedy High graduate who authorities say was killed by her ex-boyfriend in Oakland last weekend, is seeking financial support for funeral costs.

Phongphoumy was stabbed to death in front of her parents on Sunday inside Oakland Market on 18th Street in West Oakland, where she and her ex worked, according to loved ones and news reports.

The suspect, 35-year-old Abdol Ali Omar, attacked Phongphoumy after her multiple attempts to end their relationship, the San Jose Mercury News reported. The murder had several witnesses, was caught on camera and Omar reportedly admitted to stabbing her as an employee tried to stop him.

An online fundraising campaign has been started to aid her devastated family with funeral costs.

“This was very sudden and tragic death,” according to the online campaign. “She currently has 2 younger brothers here at Kennedy. Their family are grateful for any support you can give. Please share this with anyone who might be able to help.”

  1. May family, friends and loved ones find peace and comfort during this time.
