The opening of a winery in a WWII-era assembly plant on the Point Richmond waterfront inched closer this week after Richmond City Council approved a 20-year lease agreement for the space.
Alameda-based winery R&B Cellars’ lease is scheduled to start early next year to use a portion of Riggers Loft for a fully-equipped winery, to be named “Riggers Loft Wine Company.”
The 27,140-square-foot, newly renovated warehouse is located at 1325 Canal Blvd., right next to where the SS Red Oak Victory is docked. The Port of Richmond will rent out the space at a cost of $100,800 annually, according to the agreement.
The winery will take up 21,000 square feet of Riggers Loft building, as well as 15,000 square feet of dockside space next to the building. The owners have expressed excitement over using as much of the site’s 270 degree view of the bay to boost visitors’ experience.
As part of the lease agreement, the winery will be permitted to receive grapes, ferment them and store and age wine in tanks and barrels. The lease also allows the owners to follow through with their intention to have a tasting room with accompanying food and to hold events.
