Victim chases robbery suspect in Richmond, then robbery suspect chases victim; bystander grazed by stray bullet

A robbery victim was injured while chasing after at least one armed robber in Richmond late Monday morning in a wild incident that led to a bystander being grazed by a bullet, police said.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting in the 2700 block of Oxford Ave. at 11:38 a.m. and passed a crashed vehicle nearby, Richmond police spokesperson Nicole Abetkov said.

Police would discover that after being robbed, the victim reportedly hopped into his car and attempted to chase after the suspect or suspects, who were fleeing in a vehicle. During the pursuit, one of possibly two suspects opened fire on the victim, who was not hit.

A stray bullet, however, grazed the head of a bystander who lives in the upper level of a duplex in the 3100 block of Birmingham Drive. That victim was discovered after he walked into Doctors Medical Center, Abetkov said.

But the pursuit was not over and would take an odd turn. At one point the victim stopped pursuing the suspect vehicle, but then the driver of the suspect vehicle began to pursue him, Abetkov said.

Both drivers eventually crashed near Shane Driver and Fordham Street, where they got into a fight. Eventually the robbery suspect or suspects fled.

Police searching the area soon located a suspect in a nearby yard in the 2800 block of Devon Way who was positively identified by the victim. The suspect has not been identified for investigative reasons.

Police are searching for a possible second suspect but are unsure whether this actually is a second suspect due to conflicting reports, Abetkov said.

The victim and bystander were not seriously injured after the incident, Abetkov said.

“I can say it was a pretty crazy scene…or scenes,” the police spokesperson added.
