Imposter utility workers rob El Cerrito seniors of $7,000 during storm

Suspects posing as utility workers rob El Cerrito seniors of $7,000 in cash, jewelry

During Thursday’s storm, two heartless robbers wearing PG&E-like jackets convinced an elderly El Cerrito couple to allow them into their home, police said.

As heavy winds and rainfall pounded the region, causing power outages and flooding, the suspects contacted the couple at their home on Richmond Street about 10:30 a.m. and claimed they needed to inspect the water meter, according to El Cerrito police.

While one suspect distracted the couple, the other went shopping, stealing more than $7,000 worth of jewelry and cash from a bedroom, police said.

The investigation is ongoing.
