Richmond Vice Mayor Jovanka Beckles started a gofundme.com campaign on Wednesday to pay for a struggling family’s Pacific Gas & Electric Co. bill.
Beckles, who also works as a Contra Costa County mental health specialist, says the campaign aims to help a single mother who escaped with her four children from an abusive, potentially murderous spouse and has been struggling to pay for food, housing and utilities.
The mother, whose children suffer from emotional disabilities, has had to make the difficult choices of paying rent instead of the PG&E bill.
“Now, after months of robbing Peter to pay Paul, and exploring every legal alternative, PG&E will be turned off tomorrow by 5:00..if the accumulated amount is not paid in full,” Beckles wrote in the campaign description.
The gofundme.com goal is to raise $950 for the family. As of 9:45 a.m. Thursday, $795 had been donated by 21 individuals.
“Please help,” Beckles added. “This woman is trying so hard to provide for her family and needs a little help. She has survived breast cancer. She has survived domestic violence. Now, please help her survive the winter.”
