Amazon is donating a portion of sales to an effort to revitalize downtown Richmond through its AmazonSmile initiative.
The online retail giant allows shoppers who make a purchase at smile.amazon.com to choose from a long list of charitable organizations. That charity will receive .5-percent of that shopper’s purchases from AmazonSmile courtesy of Amazon.
Among the charitable organization included in AmazonSmile is Richmond Main Street Initiative (RMSI), the nonprofit that is spearheading a City Council-approved effort to revitalize downtown.
Any donations that come from shoppers purchasing at AmazonSmile will be used to “support our revitalization efforts in downtown Richmond, bringing arts, entertainment, business and services,” RMSI Executive Director Amanda Elliott told us Monday.
Amazon says those who shop on AmazonSmile will find the “exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com.”
When first visiting AmazonSmile, shoppers must select RMSI as the charity they’d like to receive donations. Every AmazonSmile-eligible purchase made thereafter will result in a donation to RMSI, the company said. Shoppers can change their choice of charity at any time.
In addition to AmazonSmile, RMSI on Tuesday will be launching its annual giving campaign to coincide with Giving Tuesday, Elliott said.
