Despite the loss of star guard Mariya Moore, who now plays for the University of Louisville, Salesian College Preparatory’s girls basketball team is No. 2 in the nation in USA Today’s preseason rankings.

Here’s the reason USA Today gave The Pride such an impressive ranking:

salesian.11-20Last year, Salesian was the first team in school history to make it to the championship game for the state’s highest division. The team fell to Southern California powerhouse Long Beach Poly 70-52 in the CIF Open Division state title game.

In the latest USA Today rankings, Salesian was second only to Blackman of Tennessee, which has players already committed to powerhouse colleges such as the University of Connecticut and University of Tennessee.

Here’s USA Today’s top 10 preseason list:

1. Blackman, Murfreesboro, Tenn. (34-1)

2. Salesian College Prep, Richmond, Calif. (30-7)

3. Mater Dei, Santa Ana, Calif. (27-3)

4. Myers Park, Charlotte (30-1)

5. Bishop O’Dowd, Oakland (23-4)

6. Paul VI, Fairfax, Va. (29-5)

7. Long Island Lutheran, Brookville, N.Y. (23-2)
