Rodney Frazier, 16, who played basketball at Richmond High, was recently identified as the victim of a shooting Friday night in the 300 block of Market Avenue in North Richmond.
In reaction, Frazier’s teammates, coach and religious leaders are planning to demand an end to the bloodshed at a 5 p.m. rally at Civic Center Plaza on Wednesday, Richmond police spokesperson Nicole Abetkov said.
Police Chief Chris Magnus helped the effort by sharing the event on social media and plans to attend, Abetkov said. Also attending will be basketball coaches from Richmond High and De La Salle High and a pastor.
“We are encouraging the event but are not participating in the planning of it,” Abetkov said.
From Tuesday through Saturday, nine people were the victims of gun violence in both Richmond and North Richmond. Five of the victims were, like Frazier, teenagers.
Frazier was reportedly found in front of a home after sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a shooting in North Richmond. Few details have been released about the case. No arrests have been reported.
