The Leadership Public Schools-Richmond girls volleyball team has a chance to play at the state level after winning its league championship Monday.
The Pumas defeated league rival LPS Hayward 3-0 on Monday to capture the Bay Area Charter Schools Athletic Conference championship.
The Pumas called the win against Hayward hard-fought. The rival team had handed LPS Richmond one of its only three losses this season.
Julissa Aguilar, one of the team captains, was chosen as the game’s MVP for her impressive performance on the court. She had several amazing saves and demonstrated great power in her spikes and consistent serves, Pumas head coach Lili Trujillo said.
Maria Bernal, the other captain, showed tremendous grit and moved around the court, determined to continue the volley, successfully saving the Pumas from losing multiple points.
The other Pumas seniors played their hearts out and made a memorable last game for themselves after four years of hard work, including the ever-focused Michelle Garcia, with her electric serves and spikes; the spirited Ashley Vera, who despite her small stature serves missiles over the net; and also Mireya Ramirez, who was a welcome addition following a year long hiatus.
Other key players include Joseling Romero, who has had a big impact during the last two years, sophomores Raja Atencion and Marlen Santoyo, and freshman Anais Viveros, who continues her family’s volleyball tradition.
LPS Richmond improved to an impressive 16-3 record and will next play Oakland Tech, the champions of the Oakland Athletic League, at Oakland Tech at 1 p.m. Saturday.
