An online fundraising effort to send the Richmond Steelers Cadets football team to nationals in Florida was wildly successful.
As of this writing, the campaign at gofundme.com raised $28,084 from 629 donors in just nine days. The team’s goal was $20,000.
The fundraising initiative got its largest boost from KTVU (Ch. 2), which reported on the effort. Probably the biggest boost came when KTVU’s popular anchor, Frank Somerville, got involved. Somerville delivers well-written news and life commentary on his Facebook page that have attracted more than 207,000 followers, including the Richmond Standard.
The Steelers Cadets earned this trip. They went 11-1 this season, clinching the Norcal championship that led them to an invitation to nationals. Coach Will Byrant said he was overwhelmed by the generosity. He said his kids don’t get many opportunities to leave Richmond let alone the state and that the trip would be an experience they will treasure for the rest of their lives.
“We can not say THANK YOU enough to everyone who has donated and/or shared our story,” the coach posted on the gofundme.com site Wednesday. “Thank you KTVU for helping to spread the word! This is truly a blessing. #AlmostThere #FloridaHereWeCome #Donate #Support #RichmondSteelersCadet.”
