A nonprofit Richmond cheer and dance team that made waves last month at a regional competition is seeking donations to send the kids to nationals.
The Richmond Diamonds helps local children develop in the sport of cheer and dance, as well as travel and earn scholarships.
The club’s dancers are already proven: At the JAMZ Cheer and Dance competition at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo in late October, the Richmond Diamond took first place in the Division 13 Hip Hop category, and also second place in the Division 10 Hip Hop category.
The kids are now hoping to continue their success at nationals in Las Vegas, but the team needs at least $2,500 for travel costs.
“Nationals is coming up quickly and our kids would love to go to Las Vegas, but come from low-income families,” Richmond Diamonds Coach Lorena Smith said.
The team has been fundraising but is struggling to reach its goal, Smith said.
“We have some raffles, See’s Candy fundraisers and baked goods sales,” Smith said, adding, “We just aren’t making enough sales to meet our our kids’ needs in time.”
Anyone wishing to donate should call Smith at (510) 829-6131.
