Major League Baseball legend Lou Brock to talk diabetes at DMC Tuesday

Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer Lou Brock is set to speak at Doctors Medical Center Tuesday as part of World Diabetes Day.

The free event, courtesy of LifeLong Medical Care and DMC, runs from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at DMC, 2000 Vale Road in San Pablo.

Brock, who was diagnosed with diabetes about 11 years ago, now helps others learn to manage the disease.

His presence in West County is important. DMC says San Pablo and Richmond residents are more likely to die from diabetes compared to other county cities.

“In Contra Costa, males are more likely to die from diabetes than females and African American residents have the highest diabetes death rate,” the hospital said.

At Tuesday’s event, educators, wellness experts and other healthcare professionals will join Brock in helping to provide diabetes sufferers with guidance. There will be special presentations on nutrition, stress management and diabetes care products.

Factors that put people at increased risk for developing type 2 diabetes include being overweight, which keeps the body from making and using insulin properly, family history of diabetes, prior history of gestational diabetes or birth of a child weighing more than nine pounds.

Also, physical inactivity, meaning exercising fewer than three times a week, can invite the disease.
