A Richmond cop who was conducting a welfare check on homeless encampments Tuesday night may have saved the life of a woman who he found unconscious on the sidewalk with ants crawling on her face, police said.
About 10:40 p.m., police said, the sergeant who is specifically trained in homeless outreach found the 60-year-old woman lying on the sidewalk in the 300 block of 12th Street, Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.
The woman appeared to be suffering from a serious medical issue, Abetkov said, as her breathing was labored. Her medical condition wasn’t immediately known.
The officer had the woman transported to a local hospital’s emergency room, where she was reported in stable condition, Abetkov said.
It wasn’t immediately clear how long the woman had been unconscious on the sidewalk, but Abektov said police are thankful she was spotted before her condition worsened.
“We have a group of officers who are specifically trained in homeless outreach,” the police sergeant said, adding they’ve been regularly searching encampments in an effort to link individuals to resources.
