The employees of a few El Cerrito businesses were met with violence rather than praise for their hard work during the Labor Day weekend, police said.

On Sunday just before 7 p.m., police were called to the Denny’s at 11344 San Pablo Ave. on a report that an intoxicated man in his 30s attempted to punch an employee.

The man entered the restaurant, attempted to order food and “quickly became upset that he had not been served and pushed over a table,” police said. He swung at an employee while walking toward the front exit, police said, but missed. He fled in a white panel truck before police arrived and no arrests have been reported.

About a half hour later, police responded to a report of a disturbance at the Walgreens at 11565 San Pablo Ave. There, a 24-year-old Richmond woman who was ordered not to trespass at the store entered anyway and stole merchandise, police said. After being told to leave the store, the woman swung a punch at the manager but missed. The suspect fled before police arrived.

Then on Monday, a gas station clerk was slapped in the face by a robber, police said, but was caught thanks to the assistance of an off-duty officer. The incident unfolded at the Chevron station at 11319 San Pablo Ave., police said, when the 40-year-old Oakland woman grabbed $200 in cash from the counter as the clerk was counting the money.

The clerk chased after the woman and tried to keep her from fleeing the pump area, but the woman slapped her across the face and took off, police said. Thankfully, an off-duty officer who witnessed the slap  followed the woman as she fled westbound on Potrero Avenue and directed police to her location.

The stolen cash was recovered and the woman was booked at the El Cerrito Police Department and transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.
