A man was arrested after allegedly attempting to set a vehicle on fire in the middle of a residential neighborhood in Richmond early Monday due to issues with his insurance company, police said.

About 5:30 a.m. in the 100 block of S. 6th Street, police said, a witness saw 55-year-old Richmond resident Guy Whitley dousing a vehicle in gasoline.

The witness called police and also approached Whitley to ask what he was doing, police Sgt. Nicole Abetkov said.

“[Whitley] admits to the witness that he was having trouble with his insurance company,” Abetkov said.

When officers arrived, the car was indeed doused in gasoline, Abetkov said, and Whitley was found in possession of cocaine.

It was unclear what insurance problems Whitley was dealing with, as police were not able to determine whether the vehicle belonged to him, Abetkov said.

He was taken into custody for illegal drugs and attempted arson, the sergeant added.
