A man fatally shot another man and then apparently tried to take his own life in the backyard of a Richmond home Monday, police said.

At 12:10 p.m., a man called 911 to report that his father was shot by his cousin in the backyard of a home in the 1300 block of Mariposa Street, Richmond police Capt. Bisa French said.

When officers arrived they found the victim and suspect both suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead and the suspect was transported to a hospital with “grave injuries,” French said.

A man was killed and his relative gravely injured in a shooting in a Richmond backyard Monday, police said.

Police tape blocked off the area while homicide detectives investigated Thursday afternoon.

Their identities have not been released.

“Both men were found at the same location,” French said, adding that homicide investigators were treating the incident as a murder-suicide investigation.

Neighbors stood stunned near the crime scene Thursday afternoon. Locals identified one of the slain man as Jesus, a resident of the home. The Contra Costa Times cited neighbors who said he was the single father of four and a widower. He was described as friendly and someone who often helped out his neighbors.

A woman living two doors over from the home where the killing happened said Jesus had come over to her property “just the other day” to offer to get rid of bags of lawn trimmings for her.

While near crime-rampant areas, the block itself was described by residents as typically safe and quiet.
