Antonio Moura, owner of popular Mexican eatery Portumex, said business at his restaurant would improve during weekends if there was a 2-hour parking limit along 23rd Street.

Currently, with no weekend time limit for parking along the corridor, vehicles have been staying in spots overnight and sometimes all weekend, merchants say. Customers are less likely to patron restaurants and other local businesses without parking options, said Moura.

“There’s no spaces for them,” he said.

Many of the lingering vehicles feature “for sale” signs. Those cars have been stealing business from local used auto dealerships, said Rosa Lara, president of the 23rd Street Merchants Association.

“We have all types of cars being left overnight,” said Lara, who brought the issue before the Public Safety Committee Thursday during open forum. “It’s affecting businesses, and it’s affecting the car dealerships.”

Councilmember Nat Bates had the item placed on an agenda for next week’s special meeting of the Public Safety Committee.

Councilmember Corky Booze expressed a desire to have the 2-hour parking limit on weekends extend from Carson Boulevard to Rheem Avenue.
